Square Enix went so far as to completely remake and optimize their current servers, swapping out all the parts they COULD get for newer better parts and optimizing their firmware and softwares to be more efficient. This is something square enix cannot change. There is literally no way to get your hands on semiconductors. So what happens when a pandemic shuts the entire system down for months? They fall tremendously behind. You can be upset, but aim your frustrations in the right direction, which is the nebulous PC part market and their model of "just-in-time manufacturing" which is a method where they only make the amount necessary. The pandemic has left a massive shortage and no amount of money or effort could have avoided this. The FFXIV team has made it extremely clear that they tried for months, even going so far as to try and pay way above market value to get their hands on semiconductors for servers.
